David was born December 30, 1952 in Fort Worth, Texas to Luther and Lenita Battles.  He grew up in Waco and graduated from Waco High School in 1971.  After graduation David served four years in the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1975.  On March 26, 1977 he married the love of his life, Paula Silvey Battles.  Together they were blessed with four children and twelve grandchildren.  David was a very loving, generous and adventurous man and cherished his time spent with family and friends.  He was very outgoing and friendly and never met a stranger.  If you knew David you also knew his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  He faithfully and lovingly shared his love for Jesus his entire life.

David had a heart for helping people.   This was most apparent in his long and dedicated career as a Registered Nurse in the emergency room, home health care and hospice care.  In his free time, David enjoyed antiquing, fishing and working alongside his son, Philip, building wheelchair ramps and other home modifications for the elderly and disabled.  In addition, he loved spending quiet time in prayer and reading his Bible.  David’s greatest joy in life was spending quality time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Lenita Battles; brother, Mike Battles; sister, Brenda McGregor and grandson, Christian Scott Parker.  Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 45 years, Paula Battles; daughters, Heather Inge and her husband Richard, Tara Battles and Sarah Battles; son, Phillip Battles and his wife Samantha; grandchildren, Christopher, Abrianna, Ariel, Isaiah, Isaac, Karina, Victoria, Darian, Isabella, Alaena and Anthony; sister, Pam Battles; brother, Gerald Battles and his wife Terri; brother-in-law, Judge Bob McGregor; sister-in-law, Annette Battles; numerous other relatives and friends and his loyal companion, Xena.

David’s family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Texas Home Health and Accent Care Hospice, especially Jason Butcher and Jennifer Rushing.

If friends so desire, memorial contributions in David’s memory can be made to the charity of your choice.  Thoughts and memories may be shared at www.lakeshorefuneralhome.com

In reading the write up on David, brings to mind highschool memories. He was a wonderful person in highschool. Willing to help anyone at anytime. Admire him for his service to our country and his medical career. Hospice is a speciality for nursing guardian angels. Coming from another nurse, I thank him for his commitment to the profession. My prayers go out to the family.  Sending love, Ruby Galloway Smith

If anyone really remembers me and the way l was, they will know that when l praise David it is from the heart. l was not there to make friends, l was there to learn, but l did make a few friends and David was one of the few. There is a great reunion for David with those he loved that have gone before him and l thank God for David's early release from his earthly bonds. My heart goes to those he left behind and l remind them that he is at peace. Bless all those he loved and left behind, the time will come when you will join the great reunion.

David was such a good friend to many. He had a heart of gold to those who knew him. I admired his memory of all the events growing up. He remembered me in first grade at Brook Ave. Our paths crossed again going to North Jr and then our Waco High years. He always made a point to speak to everyone he could at any of our reunions and get togethers. He was a true and loving friend. My heart hurts for Paula, his children and many grandkids, as they will go on in life without him for now.  David loved and knew his savior, Jesus Christ and now will have eternal life in glory. He is rejoicing with all of the cloud of witnesses, and praying over his beautiful family until they are all together again. Rest in eternal peace my sweet friend.

David really was a unique character with a great sense of humor. I have fond memories of our 16th summer when some of us worked in Dallas as Carpenter's Helpers. We would ride to Dallas and back Monday through Friday with an old carpenter named Judd Holman. He never drove over 50 miles an hour on the highway and did not believe in air conditioned motor vehicles.  Our motley crew consisted of David, Otis Harwell, Tim Hunt and myself. It was a long hot summer but the camaraderie was priceless. I still chuckle to myself when I recall some of the conversations between David and Old Judd Holman. They had a tendency to take great delight in disagreeing with each other, and David had some great one-liners for someone so young. I'm sure I am not the only one who smiles when thinking of David.
